A metal is considered valuable if it is rare. The discovery of new sources of ore or improvements in mining or refining processes may cause the value of a precious metal to diminish. The state of a "precious" metal can also be determined by high demand or market value. Precious metals in bulk which is known as the gold, and are traded on the commodities. Bullion metals may be cast into ingots or coins. The defining attribute of gold is so valued by its mass and purity rather than a nominal value money.
Many nations gold coins in the Mint. Although nominally issued as legal tender, the nominal value of these parts "as the currency is much lower their value as metal. For instance, Canada mints a gold coin (Gold Maple Leaf) a par value of $ 50 containing one troy ounce (31.1035 g) of gold in July 2009, this piece is worth about $ 1,075 in bullion. [Citation needed] coins "beaten by national governments gives them a numismatic value in addition to their value of gold and certify its purity.

The level of purity varies from one problem. 99.9% pure common. Pure gold coins are mass produced in the Canadian series Gold Maple Leaf, ranging up to 99.999% purity. Note a 100% pure bullion is not possible, as absolute purity in extracted and refined metals can only be approached asymptotically. Much of gold coins containing an appropriate amount (eg, a troy ounce) impure alloy marginally. In contrast, the Krugerrand is one of many parts modern and historic investment of 22 kt gold crown with a declared content (usually one ounce troy) of "fine gold clarification" [edit (define)] with the other component (s) of the alloy makes the room one ounces heavier in total. Always more currencies (for example, under British sovereignty), or State, nor the purity of gold, the piece is known and constant in its composition [edit] and many historically stated a denomination in currency (for example: American Double Eagle).
One of the largest gold coin in the world is 10,000 Australian dollars gold coin minted in Australia Nugget, which consists of a full kilogram of gold 99.9% pure. A small number of large gold coins, but are not practical to handle and not produced in large quantities. China produced coins in quantities very limited (less than 20 pieces minted) that exceed 260 troy ounces (8 kg) of gold. [Edit] Austria minted a coin containing 31 kg of gold (the coin minted Vienna Philharmonic in 2004 with a nominal value of 100,000 euros). As a blow to the conscience of the 99, 999% pure gold one-ounce Canada Maple Leaf series, in 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint made a 100 kg 99.999% gold, with a face value of $ 1 million, and now makes its order, but at a substantial premium over the market value of gold.
Gold and silver are often seen as a hedge against inflation and economic slowdown. Silver coins have become popular among collectors because of its relative accessibility, and unlike most gold and platinum issues which are valued in terms of markets, money matters often valued as collectables, far higher than their real value gold. Aluminum
An example of a precious metal that is now common is aluminum. Although aluminum is one of the most common on Earth, was at one time considered to be extremely difficult to extract from its various ores. This made the small aluminum purity has been improved at great expense, more precious than gold. Bars of aluminum were exhibited together with the jewels in the crown of France at the Universal Exhibition of 1855 [edit] and most important guests of Napoleon III gave aluminum coating, while the least worthy dined with easy money. Furthermore, the pyramidal top of the Monument Washington is pure aluminum. At the time of the monument, aluminum is more expensive than silver. Over time, however, the price of metal has fallen, the invention of Sala-Hroult in 1886 caused the high price of aluminum permanently collapse [edit].
Bismuth and tellurium
Bismuth and tellurium are the only two metals that have concentrations under 10-8 by the mass (g / g) in the cortex, but at present no great economic value. [Citation needed]
